 Remembering Favorite School Events
Do you remember some favorite school events when you were in school? Many adults tend to have lasting memories regarding their positive school experiences as a child. Whether it was anticipating the last day of school or waiting for the class Christmas party, there are always going to be special times that last in your memory. To venture into memory lane, see if any of these favorite school events bring back any recollections.

Carnivals are always fun, especially when there are prizes involved. School carnivals were a way the school raised money to cover additional operating costs, but as children they were seen as enjoyment. From dunking booths to cake walks and raffles, going to the annual carnival is a rite of passage many students could not miss.

Book fairs were annual school events designed to raise money for libraries and other student areas. Seeing shelves of all types of books for the whole family was festive. There were so many desirable titles; choosing was the hardest part. It was fun to dream about buying them all.

Having a class party usually meant something was about to start: winter vacation, summer break or somebody’s birthday. These school events were short lived and students soon learned that the older they got the less parties they had. From birthday cupcakes to gift exchanges and time away from schoolwork, participating in a school party was an event still cherished today by many former students.

Quite possibly the most exciting of all school events were field trips. Whether it was going to the zoo, touring a museum or seeing community workers in action, class field trips gave students the chance to escape from the confines of the classroom on a big, yellow chariot. If you grew up in the New York City area, you got to take field trips to famous New York attractions, like the Statue of Liberty. Another added bonus of having a field trip was the chance to eat lunch off-campus. This outdoor event reminded students what is was like to have a picnic lunch, much to the dismay of teachers; who looked forward to their kid-free lunch breaks. Returning to school, wishful thinking of traffic delays were halted once the bus finally pulled into the parking lot. Fortunately though, most field trips returned late enough to only assign homework and begin dismissal.

Many adults have favorite school events centering around the playground. From outdoor play days to daily playground time, this place was where many experienced their first swing, slide ride and fall from the monkey bars. Of course, for many others, the playground was also a place where misbehaving students became familiar with trees; standing nose to bark. The playground gave students their own chance at freedom; to do what he or she wanted to do, all until the whistle blew. Similar to class parties, as students progressed in years, the opportunity to visit the playground become less frequent and eventually diminished.

Other favorite school events included acting in or watching school plays, as this was time away from schoolwork. Art, music, physical education and library classes gave teachers a break from the students and students a break from the teacher. This form of recreation was highly prized by students and when it was announced a resource class was cancelled, the result was a sea of disappointed faces.

Finally, some great school events happened in many former students’ classrooms. Science projects involving growing plants, hatching butterflies and making composting piles were fun and educational. Another subject, math was made enjoyable when teachers taught measuring skills by cooking recipes or graphing abilities using candy. Regardless of experience, there is at least one school event all former students still cherish that will permanently last in his or her memory.
