Does a Montessori School Provide the Education Your Child Needs to Reach His or Her Fullest Potential?

If you are one of the millions of parents looking for a unique, unconventional way to educate your child, you may want to consider enrollment in a Montessori school. Unlike many other educational methods, many people believe that a Montessori education is much more than an approach to learning; it is an approach to life, in general.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor and educator, created what is now known as the Montessori Method of education. By observing the behavior of children in Rome's underprivileged ghettos, she developed this visionary method that allowed children to learn at their own pace by choosing their own activities while a teacher, known as a director or guide, clinically observed their behavior.

There are many benefits associated with a Montessori education. By learning at their own, individual speed, children will actually enjoy the learning process without the pressures of keeping up with the other students in the classroom.

"Touch," "feel" and "explore" are just some of the actions associated with the Montessori's hands on approach to education. Children's imaginations are never stifled. In fact, students are free to let their imaginations run wild! There is no set of standards of achievement, so young students can truly discover what they enjoy pursuing without the fear of disapproval and failure. They are not afraid to follow their interests, and when they do so, are not criticized, nor rushed.

From an early age, independence is emphasized. During the day, children have the chance to practice practical tasks, such as sweeping, cleaning, tying their shoes and preparing their own meals, as well as choosing their own specially designed leaning equipment. Children experience the total freedom to decide for themselves what they want to do and what is most stimulating for them.

Age is just a number, is it not? In most conventional schools, classrooms are structured by age. However, Montessori classrooms are specially designed to embrace children of all ages, from toddlers through adolescents, even those with disabilities. This philosophy encourages older children to share their knowledge with younger children. The diverse atmosphere teaches students mutual respect for their peers and helps them with social development.

The bottom line is, in a Montessori school, each and every child fits in. And each and every child has the opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential by valuing themselves and their fellow classmates in a happy, peaceful environment.
